Bob,

The most important requirements are that the birds cannot see an outline against the sky of the observers so often a fairly open front with a solid back works. Even when there are only small viewing spaces if the back is open the birds seem to notice.

To me the most important is wings that hide the observers from the birds as the people approach the hide.
