Anthea's right, they're a relatively common bird in East kew.

I've never seen or heard one in Altona, 15km west of the city, so they
either haven't reached here or the habitat is unsuitable (or I've missed

Pied Currawongs used to be occasional winter visitors in the
Heidelberg area.
In recent years their numbers have increased markedly and
they have become all-year-round birds. A pair has bred in or
near my garden in the last three years - the young bird
sounds like a baby Magpie with a bad sore throat.
I would expect to see or hear Pied Currawongs every day of
the year round here.
