Subject: Fork-tailed Swift 2008/9 Report
Fork-tailed Swift (Apus pacificus ) Report for 2008/09 Season.
[Summary of 101 sightings sent to me or published where I could
find them]
In this season I was sent or was able to glean nearly twice as many
records as in the previous season. The first two sightings were from
WA. They were seen at the Yalgoo Caravan Park on 8th September and
at the Sandstone Caravan Park the following day.
It was then a whole month before Niven McCrie saw 30 at Buffalo Creek
in the NT. On 23 to 25 October George Swann saw one or two on West
Island, Ashmore Reef.
BA Atlas # 8815 was the first to report any from NSW - being 60 birds
over the Warrego River on 31 October.
It was 7 Nov before the first Qld report came through - 28 birds seen
at Croydon Roadhouse.
The first SA report was of 20 birds at Flinders Univ, on the edge of
Adelaide, (12 Dec) but I do not know who it was that saw them - can
someone fill me in please?
A week before that, Richard Stevens & BOCA members saw some at Port
Fairy to claim the first known sighting for Vic.
The first report from ACT was by Geoffrey Dabb who saw some at Mt
Taylor 8 March.
I have no reports from Tas. for last season.
The last sightings I have were both on 26 April when Adrian Boyle
saw some at Cape Leveque Lighthouse in WA and Anon saw some on the
Marrakai Track in NT. The few that Fiona Douglas saw at Nightcliff
in Darwin may have been over-wintering birds.
Of the 101 sightings I know of, 20 were made in NSW (14 up on last
year), 25 in the NT (23 up on last year), 41 in Qld (up 27), 4 in SA
(down 13), 6 in Vic (down 4), 2 in ACT and 11 in WA.(up 7).
I thank the following contributors: BA Atlas (10 records), BASNA (7),
