to the best of my knowledge they are not kept in captivity in Australia, so it 
can be assumed that it was a wild bird :)

I remember when I used to live in Boronia (back in the 80s) and visited
friends in Ferntree Gully there were signs up at a local park about the
Bulbuls. I was not a birder then and never saw one, but at least there is
some historical precedent for them being there - although you are almost
certainly right.
