More grass owls

I saw three Grass Owls today at two new localities on the Sunshine Coast,
bringing to four the number of sites I have found for this species this
month, with seven sightings of at least five individual birds all up. 
All the owls have been in grassy fields in sugar cane country near my home
in Ninderry. 
The first bird today I flushed by chance from beside a drain late in the
afternoon. Then at a site 2km away, I saw two owls hunting at dusk.
It may be that an irruption of some Rattus species is responsible for these
records as there are good numbers of Black-shouldered Kites and other
raptors about.
It was a nice way to end 2009.
