Following postings on recent records of the spread of Koels in Vic and
Regent Honeyeaters in East Gippsland, I checked the records of our birding
club. Koels have been turning up regularly each summer since at least 2006,
with scattered records back to the mid 1980s. Our records are certainly
incomplete, but Koels are now an established feature of the spring-summer
for residents in Marlo, Metung, Kalimna and Paynesville. There are also
reports for Lakes Entrance, Bruthen-Wiseleigh, Bairnsdale, Sale and
Boisdale. Channel-billed Cuckoos have also been regular visitors the last
few summers to Metung in particular, and Drongos turn up occasionally, too.
Certainly, Koels (and Scarlet Honeyeaters) seem to be more widespread and
numerous than other migrants south along the eastern ranges. Any reports of
these and other summer migrants pushing this far south and west of 'normal'
ranges are welcomed!
Regent Honeyeaters are rare in our records (Jan 92 in Marlo, Apr 2001 in
Suggan Buggan and Bairnsdale, Dec 01 in Swifts Creek, Nov 02 Suggan Buggan,
Feb 03 Raymond Island), so the latest reports for Paynesville are of special
interest.
