& my brief response:

The key is in the last line "These may prove to underlie differences in the ecology and behaviour of these diverse species." nothing proven yet. All they are saying is that a study of groups of genes in related organisms can help id some genes that might help with "evolutionary inferences" ie still no new gene designating a new function of Character.
