Manfrotto seems to be used by lots of birders, either the 190 or 055 series,
and lots also seem to use the same head, 701RC. (I think, or is it the 128RC?)
If that's true (I'd be interested to know if it is) then sticking with at least
the same head, or one that takes the same quick release plates, has the
advantage that you can swap equipment around among a group if necessary.
Having said that, is the head on your old tripod removeable? You might be able
to save some money by putting in on the new legs.
I have a 190 tripod, which is a bit short (it was cheap, though). The legs can
be released to splay out wider than normal. I've occasionally found that
useful for quickly setting up on a slope, instead of shortening one leg.

In attempting to open my tripod too quickly, I recently managed to break one of
its legs - consequently, am hoping Santa will bring a replacement. A birder
who seemed to know what he was doing recommended a Manfrotto. I googled this
and found a bewildering array of options - many aimed at camera users. I only
want something light to mount a scope a scope on and look.
Is Manfrotto the go? Would someone be so kind as to advise and perhaps
recommend.
