Hi folks

This is my attempt to drum up some awareness, support and cross-pollination
between our local club forum and Birding-Aus. In the process, hopefully we'll
all have a fair idea of how many species a serious birding effort this Winter
in southern Qld/northern NSW could have yielded.

Firstly, for those not aware, Toowoomba Bird Observers runs a local forum,
which amongst other things, serves as a comprehensive birdline for the
Toowoomba region. Apart from our local survey area, we have also been
recording seasonal records within 250 km of Toowoomba. A 250km radius was
chosen because it A) equates roughly to a day's return trip for a birder based
in Toowoomba, B) encompassed most of our membership, and C) took in coastal and
pelagic species.

The way it works is we use the first record of each species for the progress
report. Generally speaking, the further into the season, the more interesting
the species being reported, the regular ones having already been reported,
though not always! So far this season we've picked up 230-odd species
including a pair of Red Goshawks, seen by Rod Hobson at Haigslea early in the
season (see link below if you missed it):

With most of our contributors based locally, we inevitably reach the stage each
season where we hit a brick wall and could use a hand from the wider birding
community to fill in the gaps, so let's do that for a change. Here's the
target list showing progress so far this Winter:

Please feel free to chip in, providing the date and location, and you can
continue to check progress at the above link.

For a map of the survey area boundary, please contact me, but basically if
you're anywhere between Ballina NSW and Inskip Point QLD, and no further west
than Miles, Westmar or Goondiwindi you're in!

You can post sightings via birding-aus (preferable for the sake of this
exercise), to me privately, or via the TBO forum (after registering; email me
for a link to register please).

Feel free to browse the reports for previous seasons, as well as the annual
progress lists, i.e. our
Annual Challenges. Use the Search facility for specific species, locations,
etc.

Please report any problems and grateful for any feedback and suggestions.

Cheers
