I have placed a couple of pictures of the Tyto I referred to in my
email yesterday on Bird Forum - http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=149746
. Its plumage is interesting - its upper plumage is relatively
dark. I believe that its spindly legs rule out Masked Owl. It has a
relatively round mask with brown fringing, and it has a white chest
(no brown wash across its chest).
The bird in question was flushed from a tree by the mob of birds and
flew 100 metres to another tree. It later flew back to the tree it
was originally in.
I've previously seen a Grass Owl flushed from long grass on Cape York
Pen - it went back into the grass when it landed.
My question is whether Grass Owls ever roost in trees, or whether they
are exclusive long grass roosters? There have been previous
observations of Grass Owls in the vicinity of the Brisbane Airport,
but I think there is relatively little long grass around the runways.
