Hi All
I went to Long Reef (Sydney northern beaches this morning) to see what was
about. The tide was still receding and my path to the very end was blocked
off by quite a deep gutter, so I did a scan off the reef and watched
offshore from a little way up the hill.
On the reef flat itself, there were at least 2 Double Banded Dotterels in
full plumage - they must be off to NZ soon. There were 2 or 3 dull brown
birds too. Also about 12 Red Necked Stints, 1 Eastern Reef Egret and 2 Grey
Tailed Tattlers, plus the usual crowd of cormorants, Silver Gulls and terns.
There was 1 Crested Tern on the rocks that looked like it was having trouble
swallowing something.
Offshore, the birds were a reasonable way out, but there seemed to be lots
of Albatross (Yellow Nosed & Black Browed for certain, possibly others),
Gannets and lots of small shearwaters (Fluttering/Huttons types) on the
water. I followed three fishing boats coming in, which were each trailing a
good flock of birds, including several Brown Skuas and Giant Petrel sp.
