Hi all,

I made a very interesting observation this morning. At approximately 0900 this
morning I saw a male Eastern Koel in flight over Hamilton South, a suburb of
Newcastle, NSW. I first saw the bird as it flew over a group of houses along
Dumaresq St and watched it for a good 10-15 seconds as it flew towards a row of
Port Jackson Figs along Gordon Ave, where it disappeared from view. I couldn't
believe my eyes!

I have done a quick search through the archives and I found a reference to a
July 30 bird seen around Noosa in 1999 ( see
http://bioacoustics.cse.unsw.edu.au/birding-aus/1999-08/msg00001.html ;) but
this is an extremely early record for this part of the country. It follows a
report of 2 Cicadabirds in the Hunter about a fortnight ago.

Cheers,
Mick Roderick
