Dear All,

Following on the thread on registration of environmental consultants, the concept may be hard to sell to the NSW Govt. There is a bill, the "OCCUPATIONAL LICENSING LEGISLATION AMENDMENT (REGULATORY REFORM) BILL 2009" before the Upper House at the moment, to remove the need for licensing of Opticians, and several building trades, such as pre- purchase property inspectors and lift mechanics. It looks as if the Minister for Regulatory Reform, Mr Tripodi, is keen to remove the imposition of the cost of licensing on the grounds that the cost to the industries does not justify the benefits to the Community. The story can be read at the SMH site at: http://www.smh.com.au/national/cabinet-warned-on-licence-removals-20090622-cu0n.html

Make you think about taking the stairs, if they remove the requirement for lift mechanics. I would be thinking, "What if this lift maintained by an untrained, spotty, 17 year old, trained as a nail technician?".

Ah well, it is all in the name of efficiency, so it must be good.

Carl Clifford
