I assume it was a light hearted piece aimed at non birders. I think the 
descriptions in the guides are as good as you're going to get, given the 
difficulties in describing bird voices.

They really only work to help confirm an id, rather than establish one, because 
there's no way to look up a call.  I suppose they could be categorised as 
shrieks, whistles, clicks, etc, and I think Birds in Backyards attempts that.

If one wants more then there are the various CDs, and sonograms in HANZAB. 
However, I've often felt it might be useful to have a cross reference of which 
birds sound like other birds, even just a little bit.  There's a little of this 
in the guides, but only where they sound very similar.
