Hi Claire,

It looks like a Brown Goshawk to me. There are a number of features that
distinguish Brown Goshawk from Collared Sparrowhawk, all of which are to do
with body structure rather than any plumage variations:

1) Goshawk tail is comparatively longer
2) Goshawk has much "straighter" looking wings, particularly on the trailing
edge. When gliding, the sparrowhawk has an "s" shaped profile to the
trailing edge of the wing whereas the goshawk looks comparatively straight.
3) Goshawk tail is rounded at the end whereas sparrowhawk is pretty
straight.
4) Goshawk is "chunkier" in the shoulders and neck and has a bigger looking
head than the sparrowhawk.
5) Goshawk tends to look a lot more "beefier" all round than sparrowhawk
which your picture indicates.

Hope that helps!

Cheers,

Jono

Hi,

This is my first post to the list so hope i get it right.
I have seen 2 hawks flying over the Centennial Park ponds the last couple of
days and was wondering if i could get some help ID'ing them?

i think it is either a Brown Goshawk or collared sparrowhawk but not sure.

i have posted 2 photos of them on flickr here:
