I'll have to find the Lakes Entrance Laughing
Gull photos and double check the size difference.
I'll also check my field guides re the Tern that you mention.

Hey, that's interesting. The pics we have of the current Laughing Gull
show it looking a bit smaller than a nearby Silver Gull. We were
however, if we are to believe the field guides, expecting it to be about
the same size. In the flesh though it didn't look that different in size
to the Silvers it was with.
Maybe it's shy and shrinks for the camera. Maybe your one at Lakes
Entrance wasn't a Laughing Gull Andy - now what else could it have been
? Crested Tern ? Ho ho.

That's a worry........ Some years ago I found a Laughing Gull at
Lakes Entrance, Victoria. It was larger than the surrounding Silver
Gulls and the record was accepted by BARC.

The Laughing Gull was still at Cairns March 14, with a few Silver
Gulls opposite the kids playground. A couple of juv delinquents were
throwing mud at the gulls and it ignored them!
It's looking decidedly threadbare, the secondaries are looking very
abraded, and I'm still amazed at how small it is, smaller than
Silver Gull.
Sum plum Great knots too, Grey-tailed tattlers coming into bd, some
nice things.
