I went down to Point Cartwright (Sunshine Coast) yesterday about 3 pm to check
for any seabirds that might have been blown in with the cyclone. As soon as I
got out of the car I could smell the oil and one look at the beach showed that
we had oil all along the coastline. It had not hit the news by then and I was
rather surprised to see the extent of the spill considering it had been
regarded as only MINOR. After a while a couple of Council workers pulled up
and took some photos but there was no evidence of action.
It wasn't until I saw the news last night that they had realised it was a lot
worse that originally expected and of course today all hell broke loose with
our political parties using the opportunity to have a go at one another with
the State election only 2 weeks away. The Labor government is blaming the
shipowners for not declaring the spill in its full extent.
In regard to the birds, there was not one bird in sight - not even a seagull.
