Hi Andrew,
Male Wood Ducks are very aggressive when around their chicks regardless of
who or what comes close to them, so the behaviour is not atypical. No idea
on whether they can hybridise, but I have heard that of all bird groups
Ducks are the most likely to be able to hybridise between genus.
