Hello Judith,The talks were about the Eastern Bristle Bird.Guest speakers were
Rosie Booth from Fleays Wildlife Park and Mark Schuster from Condamine
Alliance.In Rosie's absence, Sheena Gillman who has been the volunteers
co-ordinator presented data about the success of captive breeding and soft
release. Given that a pair of birds could breed between 4-10 chicks per year in
ideal captive situations and the release monitoring has a 75% success rate one
would think we were on the right track. But wait....Mark outlined the proposed
project plan which is concentrating on site surveying and mapping, habitat
management and weed control and (in theory) reintroduction program. All good
and an organisation we need to support. Of the $200,000+ allocated only $11,000
was allotted to assist captive-bred bird release and monitoring due to the fact
that it was believed that EPA/Fleays would continue with their program.
However, that is no longer the case. WHY??So whilst the emphasis is on creating
the correct environment for the birds which I agree with, we may have no birds
to put into that new improved environment. There are now possibly only 50
birds and the numbers continue to decline. Will we be monitoring their
demise?Whilst some think we should not upset the apple cart and in these times
of State Election is Qld some parties are gagged from speaking, I'm not. I
believe we should not loose all that good work done over these past few years
then need reinvent such a program further down the track whilst an Iconic Old
World Bird rushes to it's extinction.BurneyMessage: 3
