G'day Tony,

Thanks for showing us your photo. I would be quite confident with juvenile
Brush Cuckoo. Definitely not Pallid and far too boldly marked for Fantail it
fits with typical juvenile Brush Cuckoo, an important but not impossible
record from a distribution point of view.

Cheers Jeff.

This has been a frustrating ID for me. Process of elimination has allowed me
to feel more confident about an ID of Brush Cuckoo as it is not black and
white as the illustrations in the 4 main field guides show for a Pallid
Cuckoo and it lacks the gold eye ring and is more mottled than the guides
show a Fan-tailed. None of the guides show pictures of juv cuckoos, perhaps
they assume that we are more likely to see immatures but it seems like a
failing in the guides to me especially considering the amount of juv cuckoos
that show up on the "identification needed" forum at Birding Oz forums. It
would be nice if some kind expert with photography skills were to create a
page on IDing these tricky birds in the same way that some kind souls have
for Wandering vs Grey tailed Tattlers and for Thornbills.

Once again the link to my mystery bird is

-juvenile-cuckoo.html

Cheers Tony
