Dear All,
Apart from the obvious environmental reasons why this topic should be
debated on Birding-aus, we should not forget that some of our birding,
ornithological and ecological colleagues, and/or their families
lost their
lives and/or all of their possessions in the fires.
I think we owe it to them to help set the record straight about
environmental issues relating to the Victorian bushfires, by
debating the
topic on a public forum such as Birding-aus.
I also think that those same people would like us to debate the
topic calmly
and rationally, without emotional abuse, and perhaps suggest some
solutions
rather than play the blame game.
That's just my personal point of view, for what it's worth.

This site is dedicated to birds and birdwatching but I would argue
that the
issue of blaming conservation management for the intensity of the
fires is a
relevant issue to be debated on this forum. The possible 'knee-jerk'
reaction of politicians may well see the destruction of large areas
of bird
habitat by too much hazard reduction burning and over-zealous tree
clearing.
It is healthy to have debate on these issues and, I believe, adds a
bit of
life to the forum.
In saying this I strongly oppose people using the forum to make
personal
attacks on others on the list or journalists. I believe that you
should
attack the issue and not the person.
