The Swinhoe's Snipe reported by Alan Gillanders a couple of days ago
at Tinaroo Dam near Atherton was still there yesterday Feb 20, showed
quite well in flight twice and seemed quite wary.
The Laughing Gull was sat on the baking sand at low tide opposite the
swimming pool at Cairns Esplanade Feb 19. I am surprised at how small
this individual is, smaller than the accompanying Silver Gulls.
Red-necked Crakes at Cassowary House, Kuranda have small youngsters,
this is the second pair as the first birds have large young.
The first northbound Dollarbirds showed up Feb 20, with 3 adults
flying high overhead; autumn is coming.
There was a single White-throated Needletail and one Fork-tailed Swift
over Cassowary House the same day, with a few Australian Swiftlets,
which have themselves been scarce this season.
