I've just received a pdf of a newspaper article about the Fairy Tern nesting
colony at Point Peron and the council works in that area.

The article is not on the internet and was sent to me directly by the editor
of the Sound Telegraph, the local newspaper that revealed the story. If
anyone is interested in seeing the article, I can send it to them directly
by email.

It would appear from the newspaper article that the council earthworks took
place on 20 January 2009 while the Fairy Tern colony was still nesting. The
purpose of the earthworks was to clear a sand spit that was blocking boat
access to a public boat ramp,

I've not had any response to yesterday's enquiry about the rumour that
Rockingham City Council removed a sand spit a few days ago at Point Peron
boat ramp, about 45 km south of Perth. There were between 25-30 pairs of
Fairy Terns nesting on this spit just before Christmas, but I don't know if
they still were at the time of the sand excavation. Does any WA
birding-ausser know anything about it? I'd really like to hear more details.
