Hi folks,

Jack has finished his latest report on our FNQ dash for the Mossman Red-rumped Swallows and heaps of other birds, reptiles, butterflies and dragonflies.

It is available at http://www.mywidebay.com/downloads/TADPOLE.doc

As always, he welcomes comments. Although still only 12 , his observations and comments are priceless. 650 looms as possibility this year especially with a Torres Strait trip coming up soon with Richard.

A couple of birding notes worth mentioning of , sometimes, difficult birds include:

The Blue-faced Parrot-Finches were sensational at the clearing on Mt Lewis. Almost worth twitching if desperately wanted. We saw 17 ,including 16 adults and the grass is seeding profusely. Probably should check in relation to road conditions with the recent heavy rain though .

Red-necked Crake wasn't too hard in the forest off Black Mountain Road, Kuranda. We stayed with Phil and Sue at Cassowary House and walked from there down the track (to the left) only 100m or so past their driveway. Incidentally, the Gregory's cottage is just the best place to stay....love the telephone booth doors!

Found the old bower at Mt Hypipamee but not the Golden Bowerbirds.......leaches there are about the most annoying that I have encountered, so worth doing the full body search after venturing in. The track is very over-grown....stacks of Cairn's Birdwings made our 2 walks in worthwhile though.

Also capped off a good couple of weeks with 2 juvenile Australian Little Bitterns (abt 6pm) at Metroplex, Murrarie (BNE), including one on the northern side of Bochwich Rd (most sightings had been on the southern side). Thanks also to Tom Tarrant for showing us the 'spot' for Spotless Crakes at the little dam at the Samsonvale Cemetery. Both were new for Jack. At the dam we heard but couldn't get great satisfactory views of Pale-vented Bush-Hen and Lewin's Rail....next time!

Cheers,

Bill Moorhead
