Dear Friends,

I just received the pdf of "Molecular Phylogeny and Systematics of
Owls(2008)" by Wink, Heidrich, Sauer-Garth et al.

In it they propose a three-fold split of Tyto alba: into Tyto alba, Tyto
furcata(including all the barn owl subspecies of the New World, but Tyto
glaucopis in not included in the analysis), and Tyto delicatula.

Their recognition of delicatula as a good species is incorrect.

Wink, Sauer-Gürth & Fuchs,2004,in Chancellor & Meyburg,Raptors
Worldwide,pp.483-498 split Tyto javanica from Tyto alba on the basis of
genetic distances based on cytochrome-b plus the nuclear intron to
LDHb-DNA.This has been accepted by Christidis & Boles,2008,Systematics and
Taxonomy of Australian Birds,pp.29,168, and by Gill,2008, IOC Master-List.
Tamura-Nei distances based on cytochrome-b and nuclear RAG-1 show mean
between-group distances of about 5% between representatives of T.alba and
T.javanica, as opposed to within-group distances of about 2% between
subspecies within each of these species. I have no idea why Wink et al. 2008
ignored Tyto javanica. Tyto javanica lulu deserves reocgnition as a valid
subspecies as it is genetically distinct (though not by much) from
T.j.delicatula.

You can see the correct poisition on my website, http://worldbirdinfo.net
