Hi All,

I wanted to pass a long a warning for anyone visiting the Kelly's Swamp (Dairy
Rd) end of the Jerrabomberra Wetlands. There's a large brown snake which
appears to have taken up residence under the "Bittern" hide which is the first
one to the left of the car park entrance. I saw it sunning on the path right
across the hide entrance today. So if visiting the area please watch out for
brown snakes.

I think they have been attracted by the rabbits more than the birds, but it
looks like some birds have been roosting in the hides, and that may be an
opportunity for the snake to hunt at night.

I also saw two kingfishers near the bridge below the silt trap. One was
definitely an adult Sacred Kingfisher (definite buff breast and distinctive
call), but the other looked like a Forest Kingfisher. Unfortunately the latter
was partly obscured by the trees, but didn't seem to have any green on the
back, and the breast appeared white. I have really got to get a better pair of
binoculars! My bird books sem to indicate that Canberra is too far inland for
a Forest Kingfisher.

Rob
