Desert Birder Death - Recovery techniques

One:
Let the tyres down. Normal pressures are generally 25-40psi (this last for a 
heavily
laden large 4WD) Very often this is all that is needed. Lower than 15 psi with 
tubeless
tyres might roll the tyres off the rims.

Two:
If stuck in ruts and you can use a high-lift jack to raise the wheels clear of 
the ruts,
push the vehicle sideways off the jack. A solid jack plate (25mm form ply 300 
mm sq
should do - NOT particle board!) Unfortunately modern 4WDs don't have useful 
jacking
positions - Tow bar works at the back, and I must fit something to the front of 
the
Discovery.

Three:
The high-lift jack can be used as a winch.
