Hi Gary

It's not just length of day - food availability will also influence breeding
behaviour. For example in Sydney Lorikeets and Noisy Miners will breed year
round.

I was going to put a separate post up but it seems to fit well in here. This
morning I observed a fledged juv Koel in Waterloo (near Redfern, Central
Sydney).  I was quite surprised as you can image. I was with another bird
rehabber who has raised far too many Koels and we both got a good long look
at the bird which definitely wasn't an adult female and was making those
begging noises that young birds make.

I didn't see the foster parent so I have no idea who was nesting at the time
but, given the length of time taken to get to fledging, Mr and Mrs Koel must
have been in Sydney for quite some long time. Perhaps they over-wintered
here.
