We should also note that we are in a serious drought. See http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/drought/drought.shtml#map2These conditions are well known for bringing inland species closer to the coast. My first experience with this species (in 2007) was in locations not recognised by the bird guides I had with me (Coopers Ck and Sturt NP). At one of these locations (Coopers Ck) the birds were nesting, at both locations I was able to get quite close to the birds, as thought they didn't mind me being there. I think we will never know with the Jerilderie birds, but I'd have to agree with Frank, it is quite possible that they are wild birds. Cheers Graham Turner |
