Dear all
Had a birding day introducing my London son to some of the nearby
birds. At Old Bar Farquahar Inlet, still a fair number of Double-banded
Plovers - we counted 20 with most along the shore line but more were
south of the 4WD entry point, down which we did not walk, plus 12
Red-capped Dotterels. 3 little Egret and 2 White-faced Heron were fishin
together in the lagoon by the entry. At least 70 Red-necked Stints
along the lagoon, 4 Pied Cormorants, a mass of Crested Terns, 1 Little
Tern, 1 Whimbrel, 2 Pied Oystercatchers, 3 Bar-tailed Godwits, and 6
Black Swan out on the sand bars, and 2 Whistling Kites patrolling the
canopy.
Next on to Wollabi Point where 1 Wompoo Pigeon was quietly feasting on
figs. A walk down the Saltwater Creek track , we heard one Scarlet
Honeyeater, and saw 2 Ospreys perched preening top of tree other side of
creek. Lots of the usual woodland birds.
Then to Mitchell and Manning Point. Another pair of Ospreys - one flew
across the Manning River carrying a long trail of weed or grass; this
was too heavy for it and as it crossed the water it got lower and lower
and then had to drop the weed or start swimming.
A gorgeous day, light wind, warm sun, few people around. Also surprising
lack of the usual large flocks of Straw-neck Ibis. Are they breeding on
wetlands over the Divide?
