Anting is another behaviour that could look like what you guys saw (and it is 
not uncommon in corvids)

Some of the behaviours described by members sound just like sun bathing to
me. Normally the bird will have its beak slightly open, head tilted, and
wings spread where the sunlight can fall directly upon the feathers. Often
the bird appears dead, and will allow a person to approach. We've seem most
species do this.
