Hi Akos, The plant appears to be the introduced Common Sowthistle Sonchus oleraceus or possibly a related species. There is a native species in the Sydney area. HANZAB states that the European Goldfinch feeds on the seeds of introduced plants mostly thistles and other weeds. I would say that the bird was feeding rather than collecting nesting material. In addition the breeding season is usually from September to March. Regards Greg Clancy |
