On this topic, my grandmother who lived at the Entrance (NSw Central Coast) used to have a battle with the magpies who nested in the tree of a house across the road - they were constantly removing wire which she was using to tie up the grape vine growing over an old shed. It took some time to find what or who was actually doing this before we saw the magpies flying of with some. When I got the bins on the nest in the neighbouring property, the 'frame' was largely composed of wire (but no barbed or chicken, as far as I remember). Cheers,
