Hi all
Had a great day at Capertee Valley last Fri 27 Jun in perfect conditions
of c 20 degrees, clear skies and no people. Birding at random roadside
stops between the first open areas on the road down from Capertee to
Glen Davis to Glen Davis itself. Missed Plum-headed Finches and Regent
HE, and only a brief glimpse of Turquoise Parrot, but birds were
numerous and the scenery perfect as always. Highlights listed out of 58
species in total:
Wedge-tailed and Little Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, and an immature Spotted
Harrier resting on the ground and low over pasture close to Glen Davis
town
A flock of 350-400 Sulphur-crested Cockatoos and Little Corellas (around
40% were corellas)
Small numbers of Little Lorikeet throughout but no Swifties seen/heard
A single Turquoise Parrot just past the point where the Gardens of Stone
NP opens out into wooded slopes and pasture on the way down from
Capertee to Glen Alice
Very conspicuous numbers of Brown Treecreeper at every stop, including
6+ in the Glen Davis picnic area scavenging for any leftovers
Speckled Warbler, many Brown-headed, a Black-chinned and a
Spiny-cheeked HE about 5 kms before G Davis. White-naped, White-plumed
and Fuscous were the most abundant honeyeaters and seen at all stops.
White-browed Babblers nest-building in a cypress roadside near The Crown
Hooded Robins in good numbers near The Crown (c 6-7) and higher up
towards Capertee
Crested Shrike-tit at The Crown
Pied Butcherbird near G Davis
Diamond Firetail and Double-barred Finch at several sites, and two
good-sized Zebra Finch flocks, the first c 40 birds and the next near G
Davis over 60.
Several mobs of E Grey Kangaroos and a large Red Fox showing unusually
well
