A clear illustration of evolution in action. One wonders what the
creationist explanation for this would be - the devil did it!?
Ultimately the problem would be self solving, the larger, presumably
hungrier mice would potentially kill off their foodsource, resort to
cannibalism and die/starve out. Or become aquatic.
Not too great for the nesting seabirds, in the meantime, however!

This does not surprise me. My sister, living near a landfill (AKA municipal
tip) used to have lots of rats that at night would climb under broody fowl
and cart of the chicks to eat. They would hide amongst the clutch, under the
hen, if my sister tried chasing them.
I have also known of rodents eating the tails (stored fat reserves) of
hibernating lizards.
