Hi birders,
I thought I would give some feedback about the new Birdline Australia,
kindly hosted by Eremaea Birds at http://www.eremaea.com
<http://www.eremaea.com/> and sponsored by Birds Australia.
As a way of providing some guidance on how to use this page, the purpose
of Birdline Australia is to summarize bird records that are of national
interest. This includes records of rarities are of real interest to the
ornithological community, species well outside their usual geographical
range or migratory period, and observations of unusual behaviour or of
unusually large numbers. Examples might be:
* Bird listed under the BARC review list see
http://users.bigpond.net.au/palliser/barc/review-list.htm,
such as penguins other than Little Penguin on mainland Australia.
* Scarlet-chested Parrot in either Victoria or NSW.
* Huge flocks of Oriental Pratincole at Broome.
* Night Parrot!
Some birdline sites overseas have predetermined bird lists for national
birdline reporting. As a consequence they tend to lack dynamism. So to
some extent we are keeping the guidelines for reports to Birdline
Australia informal. Essentially if you have a record that you are sure
is of national interest, please post it to Birdline Australia; if in
doubt post it to the appropriate regional birdline and leave it to the
moderators to decide whether or not to forward it to Birdline Australia.
I course we are interested to get feedback about the workings of
Birdline Australia. So please don't hesitate to let me know.
Cheers,
Tim Dolby
