on a lighter note,?the best collective noun i've seen for a goup of penguins 
(not necessarily breeding) is: a birthday party.
it was on an old?list of collective nouns i have at home (am working late) 
which also had parliament of owls, murder of crows etc?
i'm not sure of their origins?but if anyone can shed any light ... 
i'll try to dig out the list if anyone's interested.?
