Hello all,
An amazing day yesterday on Christmas Island. The morning started
with a pond heron at the rubbish tip. Distant views had us believing Chinese
Pond Heron. As it disapeared off into the distance we wandered further around
the tip, returning 30min later to locate another pond heron in the wet area
which was obviously different than the first bird. Mike Carter and I
immediately ID'd it as JAVAN POND HERON and a few photos were taken. We
returned to the tip a few hours later and Nigel Harland volunteered to hide in
the bushes above the site to try and obtain closer photos. After an hour he
had great photos of a nicely coloured CHINESE POND HERON.
On the way back to our lodge we spotted a bittern in the grass just off Gaze
Rd. Our initial thoughts were Schrenck's Bittern but last night we went
through some excellent photos on a laptop and have now ID'd it as CINNAMON
BITTERN.
Interesting birds thus far:
Pin-tailed Snipe
Saunder's Tern
Western Reef Egret
Barn Swallow
White-breasted Waterhen
Chinese Pond Heron
Cinnamon Bittern
Javan Pond Heron
Future trips:
Nov/Dec 2008
March 2009
Cheers
Richard Baxter
