Hi,
I've uploaded photos of the wagtails from Darwin to
http://www.ecology-solutions.com.au/wagtails/.
Thanks go to Darryel Binns and Trevor Collins for going out of their way (in
the rain) to obtain these. These are a very thorough selection of images of the
dark-headed wagtails and probably the best range of images ever available for
these birds in Australia.
Features that immediately strike me about the thunbergi/macronyx type bird:
1. Very faint supercilium (not noticeable in poor light on Sunday)
2. Grey-green rump.
3. Dark band across breast.
4. White throat below bill and along lower edge of ear-coverts.
5. Slight pale base to bill.
6. Heavy wear in wing feathers.
7. Newly moulted outer tail and central tail feathers (note, the half-grown
outer tail feather confirms this is the same bird present on Sunday and
apparently the only bird of its kind on the site).
8. Extensive dark eye patch.
9. Lemon-yellow underside.
I'd be happy to receive comments on these as I have lengthy research to do
before submitting a description.
Regards,
Simon.
