With regard to Greg's contribution from HANZAB about immature YBSB which I
have included here: <" HANZAB states with respect to juvenile YBSB "Smaller
than adult; plumage like adult non-breeding but with sooty-black distal
third or tips to primaries. Bill shorter with smaller spoon, apricot
coloured; eye colour much darker than in adult and legs duskier. Despite the
bill colour description the juvenile is illustrated with a yellow bill!>".
I add the following. Immature YBSB on Kangaroo Island where I live are
distinctive also in that they do not have black facial border as surrounds
the face of the adults. I imagine this feature is consistent with all
YBSBills.
Also, whilst I am here. With regard to swifts-I have seen nought on KI so
far this summer. We generally see the Fork-tailed on northerly thunderstorm
weather and if extremely lucky the WTNeedletail also.
