As I walked through our local park this morning on my way to the station, I
noticed 5 or 6 Rainbow Lorikeets feeding on the ground. This is not an
unusual occurrence in our park (Bolton Park in Box Hill, Vic) and I have
also seen lorikeets feeding on the ground at nearby Blacks Walk.
The lorikeets always look ungainly on the ground, moving about with short,
high hops or a slow rolling gait. They also seem to have less predator
awareness and it is possible to walk within a metre of them before they
show any response. In fact, their numbers would have been reduced if I
walked my dogs off lead.
I have inspected the ground cover where they are feeding and there doesn't
seem to be any obvious food source; just the usual mix of weeds, none of
which are in seed or flower.
Does anyone have any ideas about what it is they are after on the ground?
David
