Dear Birders,
The new C&B list recognises the goshawk seen on Christmas Island as Variable
Goshawk (Accipiter hiogaster) rather than the Brown Goshawk (A fasciatus).

Concerning the recent thread regarding the taxonomic order of Australian birds
it should be noted that C&B discuss this at some length in the Introduction
under the heading "Taxanomic methods". They say "...tree topologies are like
mobiles.... As a result, there are several equally valid alternative
translations of the same phylogenetic topology into a linear sequence." (page
10)

Regards
Peter Marsh
