Spent yesterday checking out some sites around Swan Hill, Kerang and
Bendigo.
Goschen and Tresco West are very quiet at present, the dry conditions
obviously taking toll. Bird numbers are possibly the lowest I have recorded
in many years.
Lake Boga is unfortunately drying out does anyone know what the situation
is here? Obviously water is being diverted/utilised for irrigation?
The Kerang area produced a Black Falcon (at a previously recorded site) and
a party of Grey-crowned Babblers in Leaghur SP.
Kooyoora SP near Bridgewater seems to be faring much better, with several
areas near Melville Caves having good numbers of small passerines in mixed
flocks, including several Speckled Warbler, Diamond Firetail, Yellow
Thornbill, Weebill etc.
The area around the cemetery was particularly lively (with a fair amount of
flowering ironbark) producing White-bellied Cuckoo-shrike, White-browed and
Dusky Woodswallow (in good numbers), Olive-backed Oriole, plus 9 spp of
honeyeater including White-plumed, Yellow-faced, White-eared, Spiny-cheeked,
Brown-headed, Fuscous, Black-chinned, Yellow-tufted and Red Wattlebird.
Cheers,
Greg
