Dear Carol,
Perhaps I should train for a day walk to Mount Solitary - can't be bothered to
enter into the city to surf but I have to do something! how 'bout the
cafe-to-mount? anyone else in the blue mountains interested?
We did the South Lawson falls loop this afternoon (Adelina, Junction, Federal
and Cataract Falls) which took about 1 hour. It was a lovely cool afternoon
with an occasional misting of drizzle, perfect for a brisk bushwalk with
numerous stops to admire the falls and birds which were hopping and fluttering
all over the place (too many calls I didn't recognise). It's a great walk to
take visitors on or for people visiting from Sydney - it has a picnic table
about half way, plenty of shade, and there's even a "beach" below a gorgeous
waterfall at Junction Falls! Lots of huge ancient-looking boulders about too,
very scenic, a great training circuit...
The birds we did see were: Rufous fantail (showing off amazingly), Red-browed
finches, White-browed scrubwren, Eastern Yellow Robin, Eastern Spinebill,
Lewin's Honeyeater, Thornbills (still can't identify brown from striated or
anything else), Crimson Rosellas, King Parrots, Superb Fairy-wren,
White-throated Treecreeper, Grey Fantail. None of the usual "big" birds were
out - no wattle birds/currawongs, cockatoos. I also saw a juvenile Eastern
Yellow Robin on a detour back home through the old golf course which was a
lovely treat.
As an aside - thanks for your reply about YT Black Cockatoo calls vs
Glossy-black. - I'm almost sure they were YTBCs but without seeing them I
can't be positive - this just sounded so like the Glossy's call going by the
internet and from memory... At least I was able to identify the booming call of
the Tawny Frogmouth, another first for me.
cheers,
Arwen
