Thanks all for the very useful information on the Koel behaviour. It certainly seems that the behaviour is "anting". The area that the bird was on, is very sandy and full of ants. It is the same area that we have observed a Brown Cuckoo Dove, behaving similarly. Turning to the question of the host bird, the Koel has been associating with a Pied Currawong. However, I cannot confirm that this was the host bird. We do have Wattlebirds in our garden as well, but I did not see any with her at the time, so had made a presumption based on the association. Thanks to all who replied, as I now have a better understanding as to what the bird was doing.

Regards
Carol Abbott
