Gordon, The birds did arrive under the own steam, after a fashion - they are vagrants from New Zealand, where they were first introduced in the 1870s. So they are feral birds there, and would not have made it to Australia if not for that earlier introduction. I'm not well placed to say exactly what would be the effect on our own ecosystems were they allowed to establish themselves here, but I would have thought we should have learned the lessons from other introduced species before.
