I spent a very pleasant weekend in the South West of WA near Capel on my
brother-in-law's farm.
Amongst other activities, they cultivate a good area under Avocado Pears. He
mentioned that they had often seen the local "Swamp Harriers" eating the
avocado fruit in the orchard. At that point a raptor flew over that was a
Whistling Kite but which he identified as a harrier. There were a number of
Swamp Harriers around as well as the Whistling Kites but he had never
appreciated the difference and had assumed that they were all Swamp Harriers.
We kept a look out for any raptors eating fruit but without success. They had
recently finished picking and so available fruit was now few and far between.
As a result I was unable to establish whether it was the Harriers or the Kites
that had taken a liking to Avocado Pear but I suspect that it is the latter. I
have not heard of such behaviour before but then I have not actually done any
investigation into it either - it may be a very common practice.
