Andrew,
Seeing as the official language in Belize is English* and is a British
colony, I can not imagine why they would object to English language
common names. They may object to them being imposed by the Americans
though.

The AOU's South American Classification Committee seems to do a good
job to me, and I've heard more knowledgable people say the same. It
has
representation from outside the US - and a lot of neotropical work is
done from the US. I doubt Spanish&Portugese speakers resent the AOU
choosing English common names either - maybe there is great antipathy
in Belize but I doubt it.
