Hi all,
I was just entering the splits and lumps from the Clements 6th edition in my
database.
I noticed an obvious error on p.316, where what were treated as distinct
species on page 319 in the 5th edition,
namely White-ruffed Manakin Corapipo altera with subsp. altera and
heteroleuca and White-bibbed Manakin Corapipo leucorrhoa were lumped as
White-ruffed Manakin Corapipo altera with subsp. altera, heteroleuca and
leucorrhoa.
Peters,Vol.8,p.265 lists altera as Hellmayr,1906; heteroleuca as Hellmayr,
1910 and leucorrhoa as P.L.Sclater,1863.
So the lumped species should be called Corapipo leucorrhoa
(P.L.Sclater,1863).
In fact, Peters did so lump them and listed them as C.l.altera,
C.l.heteroleuca and C.l.leucorrhoa.
Another change which is rather doubtful is the lumping of Gray-throated
White-eye Zosterops rendovae Tristram 1882 with Solomon Islands White-eye Z.
kulambangrae Rothschild and Hartert,1901.
Dickinson, in his 3rd edition of Howard and Moore?s Checklist, p.628 also
lumps these 3 but under the name Z.kulumbangrae, with subspecies
kulambangrae, paradoxus Mees,1955, and tetiparius Murphy,1929.
Fn.1 on page 628 states:?Mayr (1967:312) used the name rendovae Tristram for
this. We have chosen not to use this, and nor do we use it for what Mayr
called, and what we call Zosterops ugiensis [(Ramsay,1881)].(see below). We
believ the name is now a source of confusion and we anticipate an
application will be made for its suppression.?
Fn.2 states: ?Mees (1961, 1969) used the name rendovae for this species
(transferring the name to a bird from Ugi). This was discussed by Galbraith
(1957) who disagreed, and Galbraith?s views are reflected in the treatment
in Mayr (1967).We believe that whichever author is followed this trio of
species makes up one species. As used by Mayr (1967) the name rendovae was
attached to one of six forms, which he treated as three species, from which
six forms Mees made four species.?
I think someone told me that the explanation for the splits and lumps
between the 5th and sixth editions of Clements could be found on some
website. I went onto the website of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology,
but couldn?t find anything.
Thanks,
John Penhallurick
