Yes, thats the right camera/camcorder to buy;. you were given good advice. I
am a very happy Canon S2 owner, and if I were upgrading to another camera of
this type, I'd definately go with the panasonic FZ18 over the Canon S5 (or
other alternatives) because of the optical zoom capabilities of the lens (as
well as overall good features). Its actually very tempting, but I can't
justify it because I own 2 Prosumer DSLR's as well as the Canon S2. What
makes the Panasonic stand out is the lens on the FZ18 is fully image
stabilised and more powerful than the alternatives. Its interesting that
its not even possible to buy a Pro IS (image stabilised) lens with a reach
of 0mm (macro) - 500mm! . The only thing really letting it down (compared
with Prosumer DSLR's) is the viewfinder and shooting/ AF speed. But that is
the case with all such hybrid cameras.

I also own a Canon 20D and Canon 400D, with some nice (expensive!) lenses
for macro work and birding. I can't bring myself to sell the Canon S2
because it is capable of producing extremely good quality images, sometimes
better and sharper than my pro gear (because of the IS for the entire macro
& zoom range). Also, its light and handy for when i don't feel like carting
a whole pro outfit around.

Anyway, I'd say go for it. You can't go wrong with the elns on the Panasonic
FZ18!
